DEC970B - Using Structural Optimization Techniques for Launching Nanosatellites

Session Description

Light-weighting and other efficient design methods are critical in industries like aerospace where “mass means money”. Success requires a deep knowledge of the loads and stresses, which requires FEA. Fortunately, traditional simulation software is no longer the only tool at your disposal. This presentation will cover three additional tools you can use: Creo Simulation Live provides easy to use, instant FEA results directly in the modeling environment, Topology Optimization automatically generates efficient structure based on functional design criteria, and Lattice Structures enable you to hollow out material without sacrificing strength. Using a “CubeSat” Nanosatellite and the publicly available SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket launch data, a simple Optical bracket will be designed using all of the above methods. The purpose of this session is to show the audience how these features work and compare results. Additionally, the test, launch and manufacturing costs will be estimated and compared to the design costs to determine the total cost, and thus an ROI, for the project.
